Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia issued a statement on Thursday after his meeting in La Moncloa with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in which he reaffirmed his “determination to continue the struggle” for democracy in Venezuela and “to uphold the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people expressed on July 28 by more than 8 million voters.
Since his arrival in Madrid last Sunday, González Urrutia has kept a low profile, has not made statements or participated in rallies, such as the one on Tuesday in front of Congress, while waiting for his asylum situation in Spain to be regularized and waiting to meet with the head of the Spanish executive. This meeting finally took place this Thursday at the Moncloa Palace, after President Sánchez ended his tour of China yesterday.
Accompanied by his daughter, Carolina González, the Venezuelan opposition candidate had a “very pleasant and interesting” conversation with the president of the government this Thursday, whom he thanked for his “willingness” to welcome him and his wife to Spain. At the same time, he noted in the letter: “I expressed our gratitude for your interest in working for the restoration of democracy and respect for human rights in Venezuela.”
The meeting between the opposition leader and the president of the government comes after the Congress of Deputies approved an initiative by the Popular Party to recognize Edmundo González as the elected president of Venezuela, although this competence ultimately falls to the head of the Executive, who has already ruled out this possibility, at least for the moment, and has limited himself to following the guidelines set by the European Union.
