I do not forget: 51 years from the moment Turkey’s invasion to Cyprus

On the morning of July 20, 1974, the sound of a siren woke up all over Cyprus. It was a warning of the Turkish invasion of the island, which was supposed to bring up to 36% of Cyprus territory a month later, which continues to this day.

Cyprus is the only country in the European Union under occupation. And it all started 51 years ago.

The Turkish armed forces landed in Cyrian, while the Turkish Air Force were aimed at Cyprus, causing panic and death scattering. Thousands of paratroopers landed on Cypriot territory, where residents observed and experienced a nightmare that no one even forgets today.

Türkiye continues to argue that this is not an invasion, but a peaceful intervention aimed at restoring the constitutional order and protecting Turkish Cypriots.

Five days ago, he was preceded by the reason for the invasion of Turkey. The Hunt of Greece was canceled by the president of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, who fled through the pathos and arrived in New York, where he condemned the invasion of colonels and the intention to unite Greece. Some say that this speech of Makarios gave the Turks to invade Cyprus, but military training was already on the Turkish side when the next morning landed.

The Greek side was caught unprepared, as a result of which the Turkish invaders were very convenient, which was surprised by themselves. Under the command of General Nautin Ersin, more than 40,000 troops broke into Cyprus.

The units of the National Guard and the Eldeik, when they mobilized, a few hours after the start of the invasion of Atlas, began to fight on their own, without air coating and modern weapons. According to estimates, there were about 12,000 people under the command of the brigades Michael Georgitsis, who had a general order in the coup against Makarios.

Meanwhile, the Cyprian population of the Greeks began to mobilize and participate in an uneven struggle with the fact that everyone had, shooting from the roofs of his houses against paratroopers. But the battle was uneven, and the truce, which was achieved a few hours later, was finally temporarily, since Türkiye had only 3% of Cyprus.

In August, he dealt the last blow to Attila II, ignoring the UN resolution and occupying the part of the island that he holds to this day. The United Nations and the European Committee on Human Rights have repeatedly condemned Turkey for moving the population and settlements that are equivalent to ethnic cleaning in order to prevent the return of Greek Cycling refugees to their homes and many other atrocities.

The Greek Cyprus side was also convicted of atrocities against Cypriots -the Turkish, especially for the murder of Marathi, Santamaris and Aloa during the second Turkish invasion in August. Since then, almost 2000 went missing, and the drama of their relatives threw another black veil based on the problem of Cyprus.

Talk about solving the problem of Cyprus was not made after five decades, and there are those who believe that they will never perform.

But Cyprus and Hellenism hold in their hearts of the two lords during this dramatic period: “I do not forget.”
