“I don’t want to run away”

The Fourth Section of the Provincial Court of Valencia held a session on Thursday in which it assessed the imprisonment of the former president of the Generalitat and former minister of the PP Eduardo Zaplanawho was sentenced to ten years and five months in prison for his main part in the ITV plot in the Erial affair.

Zaplana’s defense provided a medical reportdated 2019 and signed by the court’s forensic doctors, as a basis for avoiding entry into prison. Likewise, the Cartagena politician insisted that “he has no intention of fleeing” the country.

For its part, in the vistilla, the anti-corruption prosecution asked the immediate entry to the Zaplana prison to prevent him from escaping, as did José María Tabares, convicted in the Ivex case; while his defense opposed it, saying that this possibility does not exist due to his illness and his family roots: “There is not the slightest indication of risk. “He has his house, his family and he has everything in Spain.”

Immediately, the former Valencian president spoke and declared that he had no intention of fleeing the country: “I am not in the mood to flee,” he stressed. The magistrates, after hearing the arguments of both the prosecutor and the defense, must make a decision which could be communicated in the coming days.

If it were decided that Zaplana should go to prison until the Supreme Court has ruled on appeals filed against the conviction, in most cases the decision would be forwarded to the execution courts and he would have a period of a few days to enter. prison.
