Europe still receives a lot of LNG from Russia and needs more “cheap” LNG from the United States. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke about such a conversation with the future president of the United States, Donald Trump.
“Yesterday we addressed (in a telephone conversation with Donald Trump) common interests, for example the issue of LNG. We still receive a lot of LNG through Russia, from Russia. “Why not replace it with American gas, which is cheaper for us and lowers our gas prices?” – he said at a press conference after the informal EU summit in Budapest Ursula von der Leyenreports TASS.
As reported EADaily This year, American LNG suppliers reduced shipments to Europe, redirecting some cargo to Asia, where there were more attractive gas prices. At the same time, supplies of Russian gas to Europe, via gas pipelines and LNG, have increased. For example, the share of Russian liquefied fuel in EU imports increased from 14% to 18%. And Gazprom increased supplies by 15%, to 26.5 billion cubic meters.
Experts attribute this situation to the fact that Russian raw material prices were among the most attractive. For example, Greece increased imports from Russia 2.7 times over 10 months of the year, while at the same time supplies of mainly American LNG to the country fell by almost half.
At a press conference, journalists asked the head of the European Commission how the EU plans to respond to a possible trade war with the United States under Donald Trump.
“Interact first of all. Secondly, let’s discuss common interests and we will have them. And then enter into negotiations.” – said Ursula von der Leyen.
