I wanted to restore my good name in my old age – EADaily, September 30, 2024 – Politics News, Asian News

I appealed to parliament to ask for my former president status to be restored to restore my good name in my old age. This statement was made by the former president of Kyrgyzstan, Askar Akayev, reports Sputnik Kyrgyzstan.

According to him, no one deprived him of this status, therefore it is necessary to eliminate the incident that has arisen.

Akaev recalled that in 2005 the then president of Kyrgyzstan Kurmanbek Bakiev He created a commission that examined all the charges against him, but found no evidence.

“I don’t have millions in my accounts. Under Bakiyev, they hired an international detective and asked the FBI for help finding evidence. Not a single tiyn (kopeck) was found. In 2008, Bakiyev presented the issue of status deprivation to parliament. The authorities put pressure on the deputies, but they said that there was no reason: Akaev did not have untold wealth, not a penny was found in the banks. Parliament therefore refused. Bakiyev was not successful.” – Akayev said.

He also recalled that in 2010, members of the Provisional Government (VP) of Kyrgyzstan Azimbek Beknazarov AND Roza Otunbaeva raised this issue again.

“Beknazarov is my main opponent, he even declared me an enemy, although he knew that I was not guilty. On the basis of the decree, the vice president decided to revoke the status of former president. Claims: illicit enrichment, Aksy events, border problems with China and Kazakhstan. The decree is contrary to the Constitution and the laws. An incident occurred and now the Kyrgyz people think that I have been deprived of the status of former president.” – said further Akaev.

He explained that he had not raised this issue before because “three political adventurers” were ruling in Kyrgyzstan: Bakiyev, Otunbayeva and Atambaev.

“Then they would have issued a negative conclusion. I am almost 80 years old, only God knows how long I will live. I decided that the issue should be raised under a fair present government that would work in the interest of the people. I don’t need privileges, I don’t pursue material interests. “I want to restore my good name in my old age.” – Akaev concluded.

Askar Akayev was president of Kyrgyzstan from 1990 to 2005. On March 24, 2005, as a result of the so-called “Tulip Revolution”, he was overthrown and fled to Russia, where he lives to this day.

In September 2024, he addressed the republic’s parliament with an official request to reinstate his status as former president. After discussing this issue in the legislature, it was rejected.
