John Spencer, urban warfare expert and head of research at the Institute of Modern Warfare, shared his analysis of the IDF operation in Gaza, highlighting its importance for future military tactics.

He pointed out five key aspects, including the difficulty of fighting in dense urban environments where it is difficult to separate militants from civilians. This requires maximum precision and caution on the part of commanders, especially when the enemy uses the population as human shields.
Spencer also pointed out the role of social media, where operational consequences often shape public opinion without taking into account the full complexity of the military situation. He calls it “trial by outcome” because the destruction is perceived without context about the measures taken to minimize casualties.
Hamas terrorists’ dual role as a ruling organization and fighting force presents another challenge, as the organization exploits the city’s infrastructure, including tunnel networks, for guerrilla tactics. This gives the militants a significant advantage, allowing them to attack and escape by surprise.
The current conflict reflects, according to Spencer, a major change in modern military tactics. He sees Gaza as a kind of laboratory where new techniques are being developed that in the future can be used by armies around the world.
