“If there’s no money, there’s no body” – What to do to avoid problems with insurance abroad?

Some Azerbaijani citizens notice that local insurance companies are not recognized in the countries they visit. This sometimes leads to very serious problems.

One such incident occurred last week in Poland. Oku.AzAccording to the information obtained, our compatriot, who visited Poland to see his daughter and was admitted to the hospital due to her worsening condition, was treated there for almost a month. But unfortunately he passed away. During the woman’s stay in the hospital, expenses amounting to PLN 30,000 (AZN 13,311) were incurred, and the hospital administration said that if they are not paid, the citizen’s death certificate will not be issued. Since the insurance company used by the elderly woman did not have a contract with the hospital in Poland, the company did not cover the citizen’s financial expenses.

Moreover, some of our compatriots believe that it is more appropriate to sign contracts with insurance companies of the countries they visit. That is, in this case, it is possible to obtain the necessary financial resources quickly and without problems. True, they emphasize that the price of such a contract is expensive in comparison.

But what should citizens do to avoid problems related to insurance costs abroad?

About the topic Oku.AzInsurance expert who answers questions from Vusal Badalov He noted that the main purpose of travel insurance is to provide financial compensation for damages caused to a citizen on a trip in case of sudden illness outside the country’s borders:

“This type of insurance varies depending on the duration of the trip, the reason, the age of the insured and the conditions of the contract. If the insurance company is not recognized in the country of visit of the citizens, it will not be possible to obtain a visa.”

According to the expert, according to the demand, citizens should inform insurance companies how much coverage they want during the contract:

“Schengen countries require travel insurance for a minimum amount of thirty thousand euros. When citizens sign a contract with an insurance company, they should familiarize themselves with the conditions in order to avoid problems. The limit and scope of damages covered by the company are specified in the contract.”

At the same time, the expert pointed out that the contracts mention the contact number for contacting the service center:

“When citizens contact that number, they are directed to pharmacies and hospitals located in the country they are visiting. In addition, the process of refunding the funds paid is carried out if a receipt is presented.”

V. Badalov does not consider the conclusion of contracts with insurance companies of foreign countries to be effective:

“It is more appropriate for travelers to sign contracts with insurance companies in their own countries. Because some countries have such contracts that are required at border control, and without such documents it is impossible to travel. Some citizens can take out medical insurance. Insurance in foreign countries is only intended to cover some of their medical needs. However, the price of insurance in foreign countries is higher than that required by local companies. In any case, it is important for citizens to be insured in their own countries.”
