“If we made a motion of censure against the PP for corruption, how could we not do it when it has more than 200 deaths on the table”

The spokesperson for Compromís, Joan Baldoví, urges his former members of the PSPV-PSOE to jointly present a motion of censure against the Consell of Carlos Mazón to change an executive “incapable” of confronting the leadership of DANA. The Valencians have offered their 15 deputies to their opposition colleagues, given that they need 20 to register this proposal so that it can be debated in the Valencian courts, but the socialists have not responded formally to this proposal. Compromís also presented a commission of inquiry to clarify the management of the first hours of the DANA and establish prevention mechanisms against future floods. On these and other issues, the Valencian leader speaks to elDiario.es from his office in the Valencian Parliament.

One of the most important initiatives they have raised as opposition is the motion of censure against the President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón. How will the negotiations with the PSPV-PSOE promote it?

These votes have no expiration date. With each day that passes, it becomes more and more necessary that this government no longer continues, this government represents a danger to the lives of Valencians. We should present it out of decency, out of shame and because people ask us to. The street demands that Mazón does not continue another day. I do not understand, like many socialist voters, the position of the PSPV: the problem is the PP, it is a government of incompetents. If we tabled a motion of censure against a party [en referencia al gobierno de Mariano Rajoy en 2018] because he was up to his eyeballs in corruption, how can we not make a motion of censure against a government which has demonstrated its incompetence, which proved it a few days later, and which has more than 200 deaths on the table . I don’t understand the PSPV’s position.

We understand that you have not received a response to your offer.

Not at the moment, but we insist. They have our 15 deputies because we cannot present it. If we had had them, we would have presented it the day after Mazón appeared. People don’t want a man who has abandoned them, who has lied, who shows that he is not good enough. The Valencians feel abandoned by this government. For democratic hygiene, shame and decency, we should present this motion. We continue to call the PSPV because Mazón is not going to resign, nor is the PP going to replace him with another. When Pedro Sánchez ran for this no-confidence motion, he had no guarantee of winning and he ran because he understood that, out of decency, he had to present it to a corrupt party. Now that we are faced with an ineffective, useless party, which lies and which only wants to save its skin… We must encourage the PSPV to present it.

They would need Vox to approve this motion of censure.

We should all vote in good conscience. I believe that we are facing an event serious enough for the interests of the people to come before those of the party. We should ask ourselves whether Mazón and this government are best placed to lead this step. I know that there are PP deputies who are not satisfied with their president’s management of this crisis.

They created a legal team to study the legal actions. How is this work going?

We requested hundreds of documents from departments. When we present something, it will be very documented, worked and founded, with a basis. We said we would fight the education law in the streets and we did so, in the Cortes and through legal means, and we were right in working on this appeal for unconstitutionality. Now we are doing the same thing: gathering all the legal information to give it shape, but what we guarantee is that Compromís will be present in court to confront this absolutely incompetent government.

Precisely last week, the Constitutional Court admitted that its appeal against the Consell Education law had been processed.

In principle, it’s good news that they see signs of unconstitutionality. This reassures us on our path, we must not abandon any path to fight against this government. We are satisfied.

They will do it through negligence, adding to a complaint already filed… How?

With all the caution in the world, I believe that when we take the legal route, it must be very well founded. We are looking for the best way. Compromises will be there because we believe in them and because people ask for them. I went to the educational demonstration this weekend, to the feminist demonstration [contra la violencia de género, previa al 25N] and people tell us: don’t abandon us.

There is also the political route, these commissions of inquiry which will be debated on Wednesday… What are you waiting for?

What we don’t want is for this to resemble a commission of inquiry into the metro accident. A commission supervised, controlled, paid so that everyone said what they had to say. We were the first to request the appearance of Mazón, that of the councilors, which has not yet happened, and the commission of inquiry. Some drag their feet. The PP’s interest will be to go before a commission which will try to exonerate them and we will be very vigilant. We want to settle all responsibilities and, above all, show the way, because these will be situations that we will often experience in the future.

The political management that followed, the story, is reminiscent of the Valencia metro accident in 2006.

Yes, they tried to divert attention to the train driver, with the metro accident, with the Yak 42, with the Alvia… Someone was not where they should be, they didn’t They didn’t make the advance decisions they needed to make, and they didn’t do it either. they bring together the Cecopi, and this contrasts with what others have done, such as the mayors, the president of the Provincial Council or the Minister of the Environment.

Are you in favor of summoning members of the Government to the commission of inquiry?

The main responsibilities lie with those who have jurisdiction in an emergency, the regional government and the president of the Generalitat, but we are critical, we understand that after the confirmation that the Generalitat was completely overwhelmed, that it was not taking decisions, we believe that the government [central] He could have played a more important role. I also think that state agencies should appear in such a way that it is clear to everyone who has fulfilled their obligations and who has not. I am sure that AEMET and the Hydrographic Confederation of Júcar have complied, but for the sake of transparency they must give explanations.

You asked the government to intervene or remove Mazón. Doesn’t this contradict the meaning of self-government? Would a minister have done better than an independent representative?

A month later, I say yes. We see the incompetence of this government day after day. The councilors couldn’t even show their faces. The educational community has a feeling of abandonment… A counselor who doesn’t come to the center, and when there is an accident he says he doesn’t go because he has to go see his family… When you accept a position, you must know what your obligations are. I have been Valencian since the age of 15, but when there is a risk for people, when we have seen what we have seen, when we see that it is not up to par and that the incompetence borders on danger for the Valencians, I say yes. [a la intervención del Gobierno].

Isn’t this an infantilization of autonomous institutions? That there is a superstructure that must save us…

Given the incompetence of some, there is no way to fire them because [en el PSPV] They do not want to sign the motion of censure to remove them… There are times when we must prioritize security and efficiency. It is an incompetent government and that is why we want to overthrow it.

A month passed and no advisor showed up, only a monographic plenary session where the president marked the times. Will they summon the now former Minister of Justice, Salomé Pradas?

Clear. We have Vox on a mission to “save soldier Mazón” and it did not seem appropriate for the councilors to appear, and the next plenary session will be about proposals, not laws.

We have Vox on a mission to “save soldier Mazón” and it did not seem appropriate for the advisors to appear

Why do you think they don’t want me to appear?

I think Salomé Pradas is worth what it says. It contains many keys for this afternoon. It would be important to see the president’s call log as well as that of the advisor. They will try to prevent you from appearing.

What do you expect from this new Council?

I think Mazón is just trying to save his skin. He is the only one who does not realize that he is dead, who believes that he will be able to represent himself. Appointing a military man to the post of vice president is a way of diverting attention. I wish him good luck, because his will be that of all Valencians, but the soldier must know that when you agree to be vice-president, you agree to be a politician, and citizens have every right to criticize their decisions, to ask their representatives for explanations and to question the measures. He is no longer a soldier and finds himself in a political government, subject to all the controls of a democracy.

After Mazón proposed to a journalist to lead the public radio and television station and its current director resigned, it is likely that in the coming days they will want to resume negotiations to appoint the new board of directors and the structure of A Punt. What are they going to do?

We understand that in Punt, to restore trust in the institutions, it is necessary to choose an independent person, who would generate consensus and with a professional and non-political profile. Looking at the history of the Anti-Fraud Agency, I think the PP will appoint a person to control the media. We will not enter into a game aimed at whitewashing an attempt to control Valencian public television. If we talk about professionals, we can talk; If it’s a card change, we don’t enter.
