“If you are so concerned about whether Venezuela is a dictatorship or not, why has Rajoy never said so?”

Venezuela, once again, was one of the main topics this Tuesday in the Senate. In a heated debate, the Popular Party repeatedly urged the government to recognize that Venezuela is a dictatorship, as did the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, or the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell.

The latter described this Monday as “dictatorial” and “authoritarian” the regime of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, alluding to arbitrary arrests or to the fact that the opposition leader, Edmundo Gonzalezhad to flee the country.

After the PP’s insistence on calling Venezuela a dictatorship, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares asked responsibility to the opposition. Thus, he told them that “if we had done what the PP says, Edmundo González would not be free in Madrid, but detained in Caracas right now.”

“If you are so worried about whether Venezuela is a dictatorship or not, Why did Rajoy never say it?” Albares commented in the Senate. In addition, he also criticized them for saying that, “if they are so concerned about what a dictatorship is or is not, “Why don’t they call Franco’s dictatorship a dictatorship?”
