If you have a feeling of tightness in your head, be careful: interesting statements from a Turkish neurologist

If you have a feeling of tightness in your head, what is it and what should you do?

Selma Akkaya Arı, a Turkish physician and neurologist at Beykent University Hospital, spoke about tension headaches.

About this Oku.Az Reports with reference to “CNN Turk”.

According to him, the stress of modern life and hectic work routine are the most common causes of headaches. Tension headaches start at the nape of the neck and the back of the head and spread throughout the head, creating a feeling of tightness and pressure.

“These pains are often caused by stress, lack of sleep, muscle tension and other factors. Tension-type headaches are usually mild to moderate in intensity, and discomforts such as nausea and vomiting are rare compared to migraines. The duration of the pain is every few hours and can last for several days. Some patients feel pressure as if they had a bandage on their head,” said the neurologist.

Prevention and treatment of tension headaches is possible.

“For those who work long hours in front of the computer, it is important to adjust the ergonomic shape of the chair. A quality and sufficient sleep plays an important role in preventing headaches. Applying a cold or hot compress to the head and neck can also relax the muscles and relieve pain,” he added.

“If, in addition to the headache, there are symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or visual impairment, this situation should be taken seriously,” the expert warned.

Selma Akkaya Ary also stressed on avoiding the use of unnecessary drugs.

“Prolonged and severe headaches can be a symptom of various diseases and a specialist should be consulted,” he said.
