Salvador Illa insisted on his intention to regain maximum institutional normality between the Generalitat which he presides over and all state institutions. With this objective, the president plans to participate this Saturday in the official events that will be held in Madrid on the occasion of October 12, Hispanic Heritage Day. Illa’s presence will put an end to 14 consecutive years of absence of representatives of the Generalitat at these events.
Illa’s presence was confirmed both during the royal reception of Felipe VI and during the military parade which followed, two ceremonies with a strong symbolic charge and which all presidents had avoided in recent years.
Since José Montilla left Palau in December 2010, no Catalan president has attended these events, leaving the Generalitat seat empty among the other regional presidencies. Presidents before Montilla had also attended Hispanidad events, including Jordi Pujol, who, however, participated in some years in an offering at the Columbus monument in Barcelona.
