The doctor Carl H. June, American immunologist and oncologist, was winner of the IV edition of the Doctor Abarca International Medical Sciences Prize for his revolutionary research and development of CAR-T therapiesA innovative cancer treatment. This prize was created by the Foundation for Research HM Hospitals in 2020. The Abarca Prize aims to highlight the impact of medical-scientific advances and innovations on international society. This prize is awarded to personalities from the world of research and science whose work hascontributed transcendentally to improve the health of individuals and populations.
Innovative therapy with CAR-T cells developed in June is currently being applied to hematological malignancies and has opened the door to clinical research on many other types of cancer and non-oncological diseases. In this regard, its research continues with an important practical clinical translation, since scientists are currently working to apply this treatment to other solid neoplasms, autoimmune pathologies (such as lupus) and many other diseases non-oncological.
In the decades since it began its CAR-T cell research in June, the field experienced exponential growth with nearly a thousand trials underway worldwide. June’s lab continues to move forward innovation in personalized therapies based on cells and genes, develop new strategies to make CAR-T cell therapy more effective for all blood cancers, for solid tumors and even for diseases other than cancer.
