important changes to the Estonian cultural heritage register – EADaily, November 24, 2024 – Society. News, European news

The very valuable and rare tradition of drinking tea in a samovar, accepted by part of the country’s population, has been included in the list of Estonian cultural heritage. The latter, as ERR.EE reports, consider themselves Old Believers.

According to an ancient tradition, people heat water in samovars using charcoal and pine cones to prepare the best tasting and smelling tea.

“When guests come from other places, they notice that we drink tea differently. Time dictates innovation and in homes a charcoal samovar is rarely used, but rather an electric samovar, but at events we still offer guests authentic samovar tea.” – said one of the drivers of changes to the Estonian cultural heritage register.

The tradition of drinking samovar tea has been known in Lake Peipus for almost two centuries. Local residents told how making samovar tea helps them slow down the pace of life, unites people and helps them escape from everyday worries.

“Slow down slowly, take your time, and then heat up the samovar.” — added local resident Tiina Yuryeva.
