In Corsica, airports and ports paralyzed by a strike

The four airports and six Corsican ports were closed on Thursday, October 3, due to a massive social movement of consular agents who seek to preserve public control over these infrastructures. On Thursday night, the Air Corsica company, through its commercial director, Jean-Baptiste Martini, indicated that “Only the first morning flights departing from the island to Marseille, Nice and Paris were maintained, as part of the public service obligation” on Friday morning, as well as his return in the afternoon. In the ports, on Thursday afternoon, we were approaching a situation of generalized blockade that isolated the island, which imports 95% of its goods from the mainland.

Embracing the wrath of the elected consular officials, agents of the STC union (Sindicatu di i travagliadori corsi, Corsican workers’ union) led the revolt and presented a notice to demonstrate their “concern and indignation.” They judge “unacceptable” the statements made, a few hours earlier, by Alexandre Patrou, general secretary of Corsican Affairs on behalf of the prefect, during the general assembly of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), in Ajaccio.

The latter expressed serious doubts about the management of ports and airports planned for 1Ahem January 2025 and on the creation, announced on Thursday morning, of two port and airport joint open unions (SMO), establishing quasi-management. This would allow the CCI to continue managing ports and airports, without the need to resort to tenders for the award of concessions.

“Skills transfer”

this montage “presents a significant legal risk”raised Mr. Patrou, from the podium of the extraordinary general assembly of the ICC. “The creation of a joint union under direct management is possible within a reasonable period, but it must correspond to a cooperative objective and must not consist of evading the obligations of competition.” In fact, Corsica had not followed the national movement to open the chamber of commerce market in 2020.

Due to the establishment of the single community, in 2018 the island was granted a four-year period (2020-2024) to carry out an audit leading to a new plan for the consular chambers, as part of its institutional and statutory evolution. This, in order to“organize the transfer of powers from the State to the community of Corsica”according to article 46 of the Pact law.

The former Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, also came to Corsica in 2018 to lay the foundations for this transfer. “Ports and airports are the lungs and arteries of our economy. They have a turnover of 100 million euros and transport more than 8.5 million passengers and 3 million tons of goods each year.recalled Jean Dominici, president of the ICC. Their services, helped by a consulting firm, worked for four years to choose between three transfer scenarios, when the nationalist executive was most undecided.
