In former East Germany, the far right is promoting the return of the “traditional woman”

Candy Jacob posted on the social network The text that transmits explains that the best way to fight against “degeneration of the modern era” is from “get married, have lots of children” and of “finding God”On TikTok, the young woman with 14,000 subscribers shows her attachment to ” tradition “cuddled up on her boyfriend’s arm at a political demonstration in Erfurt (East), under the title: “Resistance unites us.”

Candy Jacob is one of the figures of the Thuringian section of Junge Alternative, a youth organization linked to the AfD (Alternative for Germany) party, and classified “certain extreme right” for general information. The movement is one of the most fervent supporters of the right-wing ultra-radical candidate Björn Höcke for the presidency of the Thuringia region, which renews its parliament on 1Ahem September. The AfD, which is credited with more than 30% of the votes, is campaigning in particular for a “increase in the birth rate of the indigenous population” against immigration, as well as for the return of “Individualized attention for children under 3 years old”.

Propaganda-driven model

This is one of the paradoxes of the German far right: well established in the east of the country, where it capitalises on the frustrations of reunification, it defends an image of women… that was in vogue in West Germany in the 1950s. In the German Democratic Republic, the dominant model was the opposite: women were encouraged to study, work, take on typically male professions and entrust their children to nurseries, which accommodated babies from three months old.

This model was certainly driven by the propaganda of a dictatorship with well-defined economic interests. But representations of East Germany are still marked by these images of independent women with their sleeves rolled up, wearing construction helmets, working in factories or in scientific professions. Today, the eastern regions still have a gender pay gap that is up to three times smaller than in the west.

The anti-feminist movement of young AfD recruits is not unanimous among party members, notably led by a lesbian woman, Alice Weidel. “In the East, women also drove backhoes and cranes! Why would everyone suddenly want to start cooking?”Barbara Benkstein, 41, a member of the AfD Bundestag from Saxony, recently protested in the press.
