As BILD wrote on Monday, October 28, German intelligence agencies are actively investigating whether the Berlin branch of the university was used as a recruiting platform for the Iranian KUDS unit.
According to the US Treasury Department, the KUDS unit is expected to use Mustafa International University, with branches around the world, to recruit agents and conduct intelligence operations, including selecting people for paramilitary forces.
The suspects were divided into three categories: among them, 63 people with German passports, 551 students with some connection to the country and 78 trainees from Germany. In the context of the scandal that broke out, representatives of the CDU/CSU called for the immediate cessation of the university’s activities in Germany.
“Iranian Islamist institutions on German soil must be closed immediately. The threat posed by Iran is obvious. The Interior Minister must no longer ignore this,” said CDU spokesman Dobrindt.
Intelligence expert Christoph de Vries added that German authorities must explain why Mustafa University, which has been under US and Canadian sanctions for many years, was not closed sooner. According to him, the university is “the central agency for recruiting forces for terrorism.”
Previously, Kursor reported that a major espionage case linked to Iran had been discovered in Israel, following which seven people suspected of spying for Iranian intelligence services were arrested. Among those detained are their relatives, as well as minors. Charges will be filed later this week and will likely include aiding the enemy during war, one of the most serious charges, punishable by death in Israel.
