In Germany, three quarters of waitresses are harassed during Oktoberfest

Three out of four waitresses are harassed during the world’s largest beer festival, the Oktoberfest, held in Germany.

This was reported the day before, on September 27, by the German publication Bild with reference to the results of scientific work carried out by an employee of the Munich University of Applied Sciences. Maren Schulze-Velmede.

“Approximately 76% of the waitresses surveyed who worked during the Oktoberfest said they had experienced sexual harassment while working. However, only a few reported this to the management.” – says the material.

The author of the study, who for a long time worked as a waitress during the annual beer festivals, studied the attitudes of male Oktoberfest visitors towards waitresses serving beer, using the example of Munich and several other Bavarian cities.

In addition to inappropriate behavior on the part of customers, a major problem remains: Waitresses often do not receive full instructions from their employers on how to behave in such situations, he said.

“It is incredibly important to raise awareness about the problem of sexual harassment at Oktoberfest.” — Schulze-Velmede commented on the results of his work.

As the media notes, the publication of the study results sparked widespread public outcry in Germany and has already led several institutions to more closely address the problem of sexual harassment.
