In his thesis at UPNA, he studies the extraction of bioactive compounds from by-products of the food industry and wild fruits.

THE food engineer Danielle Pires Nogueira studied in his doctoral thesis, carried out at the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) the extraction of bioactive compounds from by-products of the food industry and wild fruits, in order to explore their potential for use in the food and nutraceutical industries.

The doctoral thesis was supervised by the professor of analytical chemistry at UPNA and member of the INAMAT2 research institute Carmen Ancín Azpilicueta, professor at the University of Lleida Isabel Odriozola Serrano and researcher at the Emma Cantos Villar Food and Fisheries Research and Training Institute.

As explained new doctor at UPNAFood industry by-products are generated in large quantities and are underutilized, which has motivated the search for innovative ways to exploit them to generate economic value.

The study notably included a simulation of the behavior of rosehip extract in the digestive system, the evaluation of onion skin extract in the destruction of cancer cells and the possibility of using the grape stem extract as a substitute for sulphites in wine production. “The first results were very promising in terms of application in these areas,” explains the researcher.

Danielle Pires completed her thesis at UPNA thanks to the call for talent recruitment from the Campus Iberus university consortium called “Iberus Talent”. This is an initiative co-financed between the UPNA and the European Union (within its Marie Sklodowska-Curie program, which brings together a multitude of actions aimed at the training and mobility of researchers).
