At least three people were killed and 16 injured in a gas explosion at a former mosque in the village of Sabyndy, in the Akmola region of Kazakhstan. This was reported by the press service of the Emergency Situations Department of the Akmola region.

“In the Akmola region, in the building of a former rural mosque, where funeral dinners were held, in the village of Sabyndy, Korgalzhyn district, an explosion of a gas-air mixture occurred, followed by the collapse of the building. As a result, a man born in 1978 died. Under the rubble, rescuers found the body of a woman born in 1983 and a child born in 2012.” – says the message, quoted by TASS.

An ambulance team transported 16 victims to the Astana city hospital.

The rescuers removed six gas cylinders from the scene; There were seven in total in the building. The debris is currently being removed. 30 people and 5 teams work at the scene of the incident, in addition to psychologists and canine services personnel.

The causes of the explosion are being established. An operational headquarters has been deployed in the regional emergency department and a hotline is functioning.
