Following several nights of urban violence, a curfew will be introduced from the evening of Wednesday, September 18, until further notice in some districts of Fort-de-France most affected by the riots, announced the prefect of Martinique, Jean-Christophe Bouvier. It runs from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
An increased presence of law enforcement is also planned. “I asked the internal security forces to saturate the roads and roundabouts with their presence and to make as many arrests as possible”the prefect added during a press conference.
These tensions come on the sidelines of a protest movement against the high cost of living that began in early September. In this French Caribbean department, according to a 2022 INSEE study, food prices were 40% higher than in France.
