The death toll from flooding and landslides caused by Typhoon Yagi in Myanmar has risen further, reaching 419 deaths, the ruling junta announced on Tuesday, September 24. The previous figure announced by the junta was 384 dead and 89 missing. Tuesday’s new report, however, does not mention the number of missing people.
Yagi swept across northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar in mid-September, leaving hundreds dead in the region. The floods have added further misery to a country where millions of people had already been displaced by more than three years of conflict triggered by a military coup in 2021.
Severe flooding already in 2011 and 2015
Communication problems, especially in remote areas, meant that information about victims was slow to spread. According to the United Nations, up to 887,000 people were affected by Typhoon Yagi in Burma.
In 2011 and 2015, the country had already suffered severe flooding that claimed the lives of more than 100 people. And in 2008, Cyclone Nargis left more than 138,000 people dead or missing.
