In Nakhchivan, husband and wife fought in the cemetery: “They stuck a knife in my throat”

Abulfat Garayev, born in 1976 in the city of Nakhchivan, injured his wife Rafiga Garayev (name and surname provided – ed.) during a dispute that arose on the basis of personal relations.

According to Demokrat.az, the incident took place on March 22 this year at the cemetery of Bulgan village in the city of Nakhchivan.

During an argument with his wife Rafiqa, Abulfat hit her and injured her.

The perpetrator of the incident, Abulfat, was charged under Article 128 of the Criminal Code (intentional damage to health).

Abulfat, who testified as a defendant in the criminal case, pleaded guilty to the charge announced against him.

He stated in his testimony that he has been married to Rafiqa for 18 years:

“During our marriage we had domestic problems and arguments. Lately my wife and I had more and more fights. In a word, we couldn’t get along.”

The defendant said that on March 21, at around 11 p.m., he arrived home:

“After entering the house, I saw that my friend’s dirty dishes on the table were not clean. I wanted to talk to my friend to end the arguments between us. I wanted to talk outside because my children were at home. My friend and I left the house and got into my car. There is a cemetery near our house. I heard you talking about my mother. I took the folding knife in my car and took it out to scare her. Rafiqa’s leg. When she tried to pick her up, I hit her on the back. Then I picked her up and we went to the house. We were arguing about our family relationships. Those problems were me asking if Rafiga did not look at the house and if she went somewhere alone. I wanted to talk to my friend in a quiet place. My purpose in taking him to the cemetery was to explain to him that the person to whom you said an inappropriate word is underground.”

The accused stated that he always paid for his family’s support:

“I have taken good care of my family. We have traveled to Türkiye several times.”

According to Rafika, who testified as a victim in the case, she did not get along with Abulfat during their marriage:

“Since I knew Abulfat’s character, I tolerated his actions for the sake of my children. On March 22, at midnight, Abulfat came to the house where we lived and said that the piggy bank had been lost in the cemetery. I asked him what he was doing in the cemetery at this time. Abulfat did not answer me and said let’s go with me to the cemetery. I put on my jacket and we left the house. Suddenly, Abulfat put a knife to my throat. And at work I told Abulfat not to lie. I told him that I wanted a divorce. Then Abulfat did not say it as soon as he saw it, he stuck the knife into the wood next to me and started punching me in the face, and I fell down from Abulfat’s blows. That’s when he started kicking me on the ground. At that moment, Abulfat went to the car and I saw that he was confused and wanted to call the police. Then, when I got up and ran out, Abulfat grabbed me from behind, took my phone and broke it. “I was lying on the ground in a weak state. He then forced me into his car. After reaching home, I took my children and went to my grandfather’s house.”

The victim said that his wife Abulfat was constantly checking his phone:

“He was not bothered. I did nothing wrong. I used the phone to speak English. I watched films in English and Russian to learn the language and not forget it. Abulfat restricted it. He was not happy with my preparation. I worked for the children and I want to help in their education. My children are the first in school.”

The case was heard in the Nakhchivan City Court. According to the court’s verdict, Abulfat was sentenced to four months in prison.
