In October, Azerbaijan will host the PreCOP event

Azerbaijan will host the PreCOP event on 10-11 October.

AZERTAC This was stated by Rustam Hasanov, advisor to the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, during his speech at the second session of the international conference “Law and Climate”.

The Minister’s advisor reported on the preparation process for the COP29 event and the activities that will be carried out within the framework of the event:

“The determination of host countries for COP events is based primarily on the geographical groups in which states are members of the UN. Host countries are determined in that order. Usually, the host country knows about 24 months in advance that it will host the COP. We have enough time to prepare the event. We have less than 11 months to organize the event due to the tightening of selection conditions. The Olympic Stadium in Baku has been selected as the main venue for the event. The event area consists of two zones – one for the UN and one for the climate community. It is a green zone where business will be attracted. The event will be held in November. Before that, Azerbaijan will host an event called PreCOP on October 10 and 11. Ecology ministers from countries participating in COP29 will also participate here, and the agenda of the event, including upcoming topics, will be discussed. During COP events, so-called thematic days are used to organize discussions more effectively. This year, 7 thematic days have been determined. All events, consultations and negotiations that will take place during COP29 will be grouped accordingly on these days. The Leaders’ Summit is planned to be held on 12 and 13 November within the framework of COP29. After the UN General Assembly, this is the event attended by the most heads of state and government and essentially attracts the attention of the entire world community.

The COP29 presidency proposed 14 main initiatives. In determining these initiatives, the expectations of the world community were taken into account and attention was paid to real problems. The main theme of this year’s COP is securing climate finance. If there is financing in one matter, two parties are formed: the party that gives and the party that receives the financing. Although these parties have differences of opinion, they are usually united by one issue, which is the transparency of these processes. When we say climate finance, we mean that it should be divided between the parties and attract financial resources based on transparent mechanisms. This is one of the main tasks of the COP Presidency. The “Baku Global Climate Transparency Platform” was created to increase the principle of transparency. Within the framework of the platform, we encourage countries with a commercial aspect to submit their transparency reports before the 29th session in November this year. Negotiations are underway with all parties in this regard. Most importantly, at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, we will once again call on the parties to carefully address this issue.”
