In Romania, shepherds organised a mass protest against the euthanasia of sheep.

In Bucharest, hundreds of shepherds gathered today, September 23, in Victory Square to protest against the measures taken by the authorities to stop the spread of plague among sheep. A delegation of protesters headed to Victoria Palace to discuss and demand the banning of sheep euthanasia in Romania.

Previously, Romania’s National Authority for Veterinary Health and Food Safety (ANSVSA) took measures to limit the spread of the virus among small ruminants. It is a serious disease of sheep and goats, but does not affect humans.

“We also look at illegal activities, such as the clandestine movement of animals, which can lead to secondary disease outbreaks separate from the initial outbreaks and jeopardize export efforts.” – said ANSVSA.

The Romanian shepherds came to the protest with a supply of food and a change of clothes for several days and declared that they would present themselves to the government until they were heard. They threaten to block roads of national interest if their concerns are not resolved. In addition to the ban on euthanasia, they demand the liberalisation of the transport of animals for commercial or breeding purposes.
