In the Russian Federation, an athlete who moved from the Altai Republic to Novosibirsk committed suicide. On August 18, the Novosibirsk Regional Sambo Federation reported that Ksenia Cheponova had tragically passed away. The girl wrote about her decision in a suicide note left on her Telegram channel.

The girl was 17 years old; several years ago she entered the local Olympic reserve school. Coaches found the body of the sambo fighter in Altai. Cheponova had her own Telegram channel, in which she left a suicide note.
In the letter she talks about unrequited love, personal problems and harassment because of her nationality. The girl realizes that she cannot cope with her feelings alone and says that she was not a good person.
“I don’t understand what my fault is? Is it that I was born with squinty eyes? Or that I’m dark-skinned? I was never ashamed of my nationality until some people started making a joke out of it,” the girl wrote.
The girl’s aunt told the Ventana project that at the sports school they called her “narrow-eyed and black,” and recently they began damaging her things.
“And the most bitter thing for the girl was that she was called ‘squinty-eyed.’ Our dear girl was called ‘dirty pig with squinty eyes,’” says Pichukh.
It should be noted that in the spring the Russian Levada Centre reported that the level of xenophobia had increased in the Russian Federation. The greatest social distance was found in relation to immigrants from Central Asia, Roma and Ukrainians. The number of people who dislike Jews has also increased.
