In South Africa, one person died of hypothermia due to heavy snowfall

One person has died from hypothermia due to snowfall in South Africa, local television channel SABC News reports.

On Saturday, the television channel reported that unexpected snowfall in South Africa has paralysed traffic on several roads and that the army will be called in to clear the aftermath of the snowfall in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

“One person died due to the extreme cold,” SABC News reported.

According to the TV channel, the deceased spent the night in a taxi stuck in a traffic jam on the highway linking Johannesburg with the province of KwaZulu-Natal, after which he lost consciousness in a shopping centre. Paramedics tried to stabilise his condition, but the patient was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

The TV channel writes that work is currently underway to clear snow from the road.
