A network of corruption around socialist ministries and a #metoo wave against a figure from the radical ecofeminist left, an ally of the socialists, are shaking the Spanish Government. These two scandals discredit the principles on which its president, Pedro Sánchez, based his political legitimacy: the fight against corruption and for feminism. “I think these two strings broke and the guitar no longer has the same sound”summarized, on Sunday, October 27, the former general secretary of the General Labor Union Cándido Méndez, a reference in the socialist union world.
The radical left movement Sumar, which governs in coalition with the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), is still reeling from the accusations made last week by several women, seeking anonymity and on social networks, against former deputy Iñigo Errejón for acts ranging from a hand on the buttocks during a concert to harassment and possible sexual abuse. On Tuesday, October 29, a court considered a complaint of sexual assault admissible.
An addiction to sex and drugs.
Perceived as one of the main intellectuals of the Spanish left, co-founder of the Podemos party and then – after distancing himself from its former leader Pablo Iglesias – of the Más Madrid movement, Errejón was until his resignation on Thursday in October. On January 24, the parliamentary spokesperson for Sumar, a coalition that calls itself feminist created around the Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz.
Before his party, Mr. Errejón would have recognized “non-exemplary behavior” and claimed to be receiving psychological support for sex and drug addiction. In a press release, the former politician assures that “The rhythm and way of life, on the political front line for a decade, have damaged [s]has physical, mental and [s]has affective and emotional structure » and made him fall into “a toxic subjectivity, which, in the case of men, is multiplied tenfold by patriarchy”. Add that it arrived “at the end of the contradiction between character and person, between a neoliberal lifestyle and being a spokesperson for a formation that defends a new, more just and humane world”.
For Sumar, who already lost ground with 12% in the 2023 legislative elections and just 5% of the votes in the European elections in June, this scandal could be fatal. The radical left movement, allied with the PSOE, is accused of having minimized and hidden the behavior of its spokesperson for months. Enough to further weaken the government of Pedro Sánchez, already under the influence of the Koldo affair.
