The inhabitants of Seyne-les-Alpes (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) validated on Sunday, October 6, the end of skiing activity in the Grand Puy resort, managed by the municipality. This ski area with 24 kilometers of slopes, between 1,370 meters and 1,800 meters above sea level, had been weakened by global warming. The regular absence of snow caused a decrease in attendance and the structure accumulated losses of hundreds of thousands of euros a year, according to the city council.

Subjected to a referendum by the municipality, this deliberation was adopted on Sunday by 71.31% of the voters, with a participation of 57.93% of the 1,305 citizens registered on the electoral lists.

New projects

The municipality now plans to offer its visitors “Sports and activities in nature that respect the environment”said the mayor, Laurent Pascal. The transformation of a reservoir on a hill into a fishing lake and the construction of a stadium for mountain races are analyzed. The city council assures that these projects will be decided in consultation with the population.

On Sunday, the community of municipalities of Matheysine (Isère) also announced the end of subsidies to the Alpe du Grand Serre ski resort, which should close after 85 years of existence. In France, since the 1970s, more than 180 ski areas have been closed, the vast majority of which are unprofitable family or municipal micro-stations located in the middle of the mountains, according to the count of geographer Pierre-Alexandre Metral, a doctoral student at the University of Grenoble. and specialist in conversion strategies.
