Initiative group submitted candidate signature sheets – EADaily, September 6, 2024 – Politics News, Moldova and Transnistria News

The initiative group created by the ruling Action and Solidarity party in Moldova submitted today, September 6, lists of signatures in support of presidential candidate Maia Sandu to the Central Election Commission.

Together with the group’s leader, lawyer Eduard Digore, the current head of state also went to present documents.

The PDS delegation was greeted with applause by its supporters before entering the CEC building. The commission is to check the signature sheets and make a decision on Sandu’s registration as a candidate within 7 days.

“Thank you to all those who signed up for every word of support. I thank the signature collectors for their work. The support I see these days convinces me that we are a big family of people who want to see their country prosperous and European. Together we can do great things. Thank you!” – wrote Maia Sandu on her social media page.

Moldova’s presidential elections will take place on October 20. Sandu says she is “excited and optimistic.” In total, the Central Election Commission has registered 13 initiative groups to support candidates and has so far approved only one candidate: the former Prosecutor General. Alexandra Stoianoglowho was supported by the Socialist Party. According to the latest opinion poll, her rating is still lower than that of Maia Sandu and the leader of Our Party. Renato Usatomou.

Earlier, the opposition bloc of Pobeda and the Communist Party sent an appeal to the Central Election Commission asking them to reconsider the decision to register Sandu as a PDS candidate in the presidential elections. They accused the Head of State of using administrative resources and state budget funds by launching her election campaign even before registering.

As reported EADaily Maia Sandu previously stated that since the law does not allow the president to temporarily relinquish his powers during the election campaign, she will combine the duties of head of state and work on preparing for the election. She said that when certain pre-election events coincide with her work schedule, she will request a leave of absence.
