Iran calls for emergency UN Security Council meeting after Nasrallah assassination

Iran’s representative to the United Nations, Saeed Iravani, requested this Saturday in a letterAn urgent meeting of the UN Security Council confront Israel’s attacks on Lebanon and the assassination of the leader of the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallahduring a bombing south of Beirut on Friday.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran urges the Security Council to take decisive and immediate action to end Iran’s continued aggression and avoid dragging the region into a full-scale war“, the statement said. Iran called on the Security Council to put pressure on Israel to put an end to their “acts of aggression and atrocious crimes” in Gaza and Lebanon and respect UN resolutions.

“Israel has perpetrated a blatant act of terrorist aggression in residential neighborhoods of Beirut, using US-supplied bunker-busting munitions to assassinate Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Hezbollah and symbol of resistance against Israeli occupation and aggression in southern Lebanon.” indicated Iravani in the letter addressed to the rotating president of the Security Council, the Slovenian Samuel Zbogar.

Iravani warned that Israel’s actions “They are pushing the whole region towards open catastrophe” and recalled that Iranian General Abas Nilforushan also died in yesterday’s attacks. “Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent right under international law to take all measures to defend its national interests and to vital security,” he said. Iravani noted in the letter, in which he recalled the attack, attributed to Israel, that hit his diplomatic mission in Damascus in April, during which eight members of the Guardians of the revolution are dead.
