Iranian officials signaled this week that a promised retaliatory strike against Israel was being postponed.
According to the Washington Post, the attack was supposedly a response to the alleged assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, which Iran blames on Israel.
In the weeks following the attack, there were claims in Tehran that devastating retaliation was on the way. However, according to a statement from the Iranian mission to the UN, we are now talking about a “carefully thought-out response” that should not violate the possible truce in the Gaza Strip.
Iran is ready to wait, said Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naini, spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), stressing that “the waiting period may be long.”
Such statements are partly related to the US demonstration of its military power in the region, which serves as a deterrent to Iran. In addition, the situation is being influenced by the “moderate camp,” headed by newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian, who seeks cooperation with the West rather than confrontation.
Recall that the Iranian delegation to the UN revealed details of a possible attack on Israel. They stressed that the response to Haniyeh’s elimination would be strategic and surprising, and could include both ground and air strikes. At the same time, they noted that the attack would be coordinated in such a way as to avoid a negative impact on the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.
