Lebanon: UN Security Council expresses “deep concern”

The United Nations (UN) Security Council condemned, on Wednesday, the attacks in recent weeks against the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (United Nations Interim Force, UNIFIL), calling “all parts” to respect the safety of the peacekeepers, some of whom were injured.

In their statement, the members of the Security Council do not name the authors of these “incidents”but he cites the dates of several of them. Like on October 29 when a rocket was fired ” probably “ by Hezbollah or its allies attacked the UNIFIL headquarters. Or on November 7, when five peacekeepers were wounded in an Israeli attack and on November 8, when UNIFIL accused the Israeli army of damaging one of its positions in an action described as “deliberate and direct”.

The Security Council calls “all parties will take all necessary measures to respect the safety of UNIFIL personnel and facilities”. “Peacekeepers should never be the target of attacks”insists the declaration, which brings its “full support” at UNIFIL.

More generally, in relation to the conflict in Lebanon, where tension continues to rise between Israel and Hezbollah, the Security Council expressed its “deep concern over civilian casualties and suffering, destruction of civilian infrastructure, damage [infligés] to cultural heritage sites in Lebanon, threats against the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Baalbek and Tire, as well as the growing number of displaced people ».
