More than a million homes in Spain are built in flood-prone areas, with a medium or occasional probability of experiencing episodes of flooding or wave attack. This represents 4.3% of all homes in the country, according to calculations prepared by elDiario.es based on data from the Land Registry and the National Flood Zone Mapping System.
Data includes buildings located in flood zones over a 100-year return period. That is, all areas that may experience – but not exactly – one or more floods during this period. The map prepared by this newspaper, presented below, allows you to consult street by street and house by house if it is located in a flood zone.
The inhabited landscape of this Spain that lives with an eye on floods and rising waters – or dangerously unaware – includes at least 370,415 buildings, according to a survey carried out by elDiario.es using data from the Cadastre and the System National Flood Zone Mapping.
The map, which allows you to consult flood-prone enclaves street by street, or even house by house, analyzes for the first time the situation of more than 12 million properties in the country. View the full methodology.
In your municipality, how many housing units are there in a risk zone? In the following search engine you will find all municipalities with housing built above areas with medium flood risk. You can see how many households are in this situation and what percentage they represent of the total.

The planet, at a critical moment
Floods, uncontrollable fires, drought, record temperatures… The climate crisis is the greatest challenge facing humanity. Extreme weather events are becoming more and more frequent due to human action. To explain this complex reality and its enormous social, political and economic impact, we need journalism that is faithful to the facts and independent of big business interests.
It is urgent to fight against climate denial and to account for the problem of polluting emissions, the degradation of natural spaces, the extinction of species and initiatives in favor of the environment.
