Israel bans UNRWA from entering its territory

The Israeli Knesset (parliament) approved a bill aimed at banning the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Israel, the Jerusalem Post reports.

The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee approved a bill on October 6 banning UNRWA operations in the country. Israel has repeatedly stated that employees of UN agencies are allegedly associated with Hamas.

“The plenary session of the Israeli Knesset approved a final vote on two bills aimed at blocking UNRWA activities in Israeli-controlled territory.” – publication reports.

As noted, the bills passed by 92 votes to 10.

Previously, several countries, including Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom, opposed the ban on UNRWA work in Israel.

Former Secretary General of the UN Antonio Guterres reported that it had sent an appeal to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressing deep concern over the Knesset bill banning the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) if the document is adopted. , will contradict the United Nations Charter and violate Israel’s obligations under international law.
