Israel investigates whether it killed Hamas leader in attack that killed 28, injured 160 in Gaza

At least 28 people died and 160 were injured in an Israeli attack on the Abu Hussein school in the northern Gaza Strip, according to local authorities, who said the building housed thousands of women and of displaced children.

For its part, the Israeli army declared in a statement that “three terrorists have been eliminated” in Gaza and that it confirms “the possibility that one of them is Yahia Sinwar”, the leader of the Palestinian group Hamas that Israel accuses of being the mastermind of the October 7 attacks against the south of the country. “At this time, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed,” the military statement added.

For its part, the Islamist group Hamas said that the majority of victims of Israel’s “horrible massacre” are children and women, as part of Israel’s “criminal plan” to expel northerners from Gaza. Israeli troops have been intensively attacking the northern Gaza Strip since early October and ground troops have surrounded the Jabalia refugee camp, where the army says Hamas is reestablishing its attack capabilities against Israel.
