The Israeli army has carried out a new attack in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, on the second day of bombardment of the new offensive on the northern flank. The attack took place in the Dahiye district, a known Hezbollah stronghold. It was the fifth Israeli attack on the capital since the start of the offensive.
Israel launched its biggest offensive against Hezbollah since the war it fought the Shiite group in 2006 on Monday. The Israeli military said it attacked up to 1,800 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, while militants launched hundreds of rockets into northern and central Israel, causing damage and injuring one citizen.
Israel’s bombing campaign follows attacks last week on Hezbollah’s communications devices – which exploded, killing dozens and wounding thousands – and are already the deadliest in Lebanon in 18 years. The country has not seen such a high number of casualties since the country’s civil war between 1975 and 1990.
The international community is extremely concerned about the worsening situation. EU High Representative Josep Borrell, who has warned of the threat that it will become a “total war”took advantage of his presence at the UN General Assembly to criticize the Security Council’s inability to “make decisions.”
“The Security Council must assume its role. We urgently need war. Both sides must implement an immediate ceasefire,” he said on X (formerly Twitter) after the new offensive.
