Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri met with Prime Minister Najib Mikati to discuss the ongoing IDF operation against Hezbollah.
According to Al-Akhbar, the parties determined the principles of future ceasefire negotiations, transferring their positions to the American side. Among other things, Lebanon has expressed interest in a quick end to hostilities and the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
The Washington Post previously mentioned that an Israeli official close to Benjamin Netanyahu briefed Donald Trump and Jared Kushner about Israel’s desire to move forward with a deal with Lebanon to ensure diplomatic success. The report is based on data from three Israeli sources.
Strategic Affairs Secretary Ron Dermer recently met with Biden administration officials, including Amos Hochstein, to discuss the Lebanon negotiations. The visit to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and then to Washington underscores the importance of this process. The Israeli side is considering plans to strengthen ground operations if negotiations do not lead to an agreement.
Russia has reportedly become involved in ceasefire discussions, adding a new layer of complexity to the process. Moscow must play a role in preventing the supply of weapons to Hezbollah through Syrian routes. Russian and Israeli representatives have held a series of consultations on this issue, but the Kremlin, according to statements, will not participate in monitoring the implementation of a possible agreement. Meanwhile, Israel continues to coordinate with the Biden administration to reach agreements.
