US Senator Bernie Sanders fails to block arms sales to Israel
Senators from the American left, who accuse the Biden administration of being “accomplice” of“atrocities” in Gaza, failed to block an arms sale to Israel in a Senate vote on Wednesday.
The initiative was launched by independent senator Bernie Sanders, who denounced the “total war led by extremist government” of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, “against the Palestinian people”.
During an impassioned speech in the US Senate, the left-wing elected official spoke of the “Millions of extremely poor people in Gaza, expelled from their homes” and the “Thousands of children today suffer from hunger and malnutrition”. “The United States is complicit in all of these atrocities. “We are financing these atrocities and this complicity must stop.”he urged.
The resolutions voted on Wednesday would have prevented the Pentagon from sending a new $20 billion package to Israel. None of them managed to be adopted and a large number of elected officials showed unwavering support for Israel, a historic ally of the United States.
Republican leader Mitch McConnell said this arms sale would be blocked. “would only strengthen and embolden terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah”.
