According to local media, the Turkish police captured jewelry and antiques worth about 26 million euros from operations in the large bazaar of Istanbul as part of the investigation of diamond smuggling.
The operation began after the initial arrest of 10 suspects in the smuggling of precious stones in Turkey, according to the transaction of CNN Turk. The origin of the diamonds is unknown.
At the direction of the Office of the State Prosecutor in Istanbul, the police raided 23 operations on the 15th century, arresting 40 people.
According to reports, about 135 jewelry, 1132 precious metals and 267 historical items cost 1.25 billion Turkish pounds (26 million euros).
The police also captured firearms and unspecified digital materials.
The prosecutor’s office said that the investigation was focused on crimes related to the “criminal organization”, as well as violations of the country’s law against smuggling, Türkiye today’s news agency said.
A large bazaar is one of the most visiting tourist attractions in the world and occupies thousands of small enterprises.
It was founded by Sultan Mehmet II shortly after the city was conquered by the Byzantine Empire.
Guides often call it the first shopping center in the world, a large bazaar is not unknown with the attention of law enforcement agencies.
In April, researchers raid a company that sells currency and precious metals for complaints about laundering money.
