Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly told Donald Trump that one of his requirements for the world in Ukraine is the full control of Donbas.
The region in eastern Ukraine, in which there were about 6.5 million people, consists of two regions: Donetsk and Luhaank.
The requirements of Moscow in this area are not new, and they are found before the start of a complete invasion in 2022.
Putin tried to occupy Donbas for 11 years, from the first invasion of Russia to Ukraine, when, after the illegal annexation of the Crimean peninsula, Russian troops occupied territories east of the country.
But even after a complete war, Moscow could not occupy the whole of Donbas and now hopes to do this with maximalist requirements in accordance with Trump’s mediation.
According to the United States, the Institute based in the USA (ISW), Russia will not be able to quickly understand the rest of Donetsk, since the Russian forces could not do this for more than ten years.
“Russia could quickly understand the whole Donetsk region only if Ukraine retreats to Putin demand and leave it,” ISW said, analyzing Russian advances in the region, adding that Putin’s assertion, that Russian forces would disappear.
ISW lists some examples of settlements and regions where Moscow forces devoted most of their efforts since February 2022.
The Russian campaign for the Chassis Yar began in May 2023 after the Russian troops occupied Bakhmut. Then it intensified a year later, in April 2024, but in total, the Russian troops took 26 months to move about 11 kilometers from the Western Bakhmut to the western part of Chassiv -Yara.
The attack on the Pokovsk attack began in February 2024 after the Avdivka occupation. Moscow devoted numerous attempts to occupy Pokovsk through frontal attacks or surroundings, which have still failed in more than 18 months.
Putin previously stated that he also wanted to control two more regions of Ukraine: discovery and peninsula.
This, according to the British Ministry of Defense, will require Moscow for four and a half years, with the exception of another 2 million losses of Russian victims – the dead and wounded – in addition to 1 million soldiers that Russia has already lost since the start of the war in 2022.
