On May 23, 1981, exactly three months after the failed coup attempt, Spain was panicked by the situation. assault on the Central Bank of Barcelonawhere eleven men broke in early in the morning and demanded the release of several senior officials imprisoned after 23F.
This event, which lasted 37 hours and left one hostage injured and one of the attackers dead, is recreated, with several licenses to reality, in the new Spanish Netflix production “Assault on the Central Bank”.
A five-episode mini-series which has only been present on the streaming platform for a week and which is already attracting the public, with Miguel Herran, María Pedraza and Hovik Keuchkerian as main protagonists; three “alumni” of “La Casa de Papel”, the success that Netflix hopes to repeat with this new heist.
The Central Bank of Barcelona, located at number 23 Plaza de Catalunya, is currently a gigantic Primark. But 43 years ago, it was one of the nerve centers of the Spanish economy in a democracy that was still in its infancy.
Although in the series we see wide shots of the area of this well-known square in Barcelona and other places are recreated such as the editorial office of the ‘Diario de Barcelona’, the truth is that the Catalan capital was not the main recording scene. Neither does Madrid, where a good part of the scenes were filmed.
A charming town
One of the main filming locations is none other than Segovia. Production company Brutal Media chose this small but charming town in Castilla y León to locate the 1981 Thieves.
Specifically, the Creation Center prison and the interior of the Juan Bravo Theater were the spaces chosen for the production.
Directed by Daniel Calparsoro and written by Patxi Amezcua“Attack on the Central Bank”, although it requires a license, transports the public to a day when the country once again feared for the future, especially in the first hours of the attempted robbery, when there was little information and feared that there was a soldier or a civil guard, as had happened three months previously.
