It is not included in the rest of Spain

In Spain, beer culture is as varied as the regions that make up the country. When ordering a beer, the words we use to refer to the different measures and types of this drink can change considerably from one place to another.

From Madrid beer to the zurito of the Basque Country, each region has its own vocabulary for tasting beer.

For example, If you find yourself in Madrid and order a “caña”you will receive a glass of beer of about 20 cl, the most common measure in the bars of the capital. However, in Andalusia you can order a “cañita”, which is an even smaller version, ideal to accompany a tapa.

In the Basque Country and Navarre, the smallest measure of beer is called “zurit”which generally represents a third of a cane, or around 10 cl.

In other regions, such as Catalonia, the “canya” is similar to the Caña de Madrid, but if you want something bigger, you can order a “quinto”, which is a 20 cl bottle of beer, or a “tercio”, which contains 33 cl.

“A penalty”

But if you travel to Aragon and enter a bar, you might hear an expression that would confuse any visitor: “Give me a penalty”. Contrary to what many might think, this request has nothing to do with football, but is rather a fun way to ask for a smaller cane than usual, usually between 15 and 25cl.

This curious name probably comes from the idea that, like a penalty in football, it is something quick and direct.

For someone who is not Aragonese, hearing “give me a penalty” in a bar can be disconcerting, especially if they are expecting a sporting reference.

However, this expression is another example of the richness and diversity of the Spanish language, where each region brings its personal touch when it comes to enjoying a good beer.

So, next time you’re in Aragon and fancy a beer, you’ll know what to say. But if you’re not from the area, be prepared to a knowing smile from the server.
