Abkhazia and Russia could test a single currency of the Union State of the Russian Federation and Belarus in the republic, said one of the leaders of the Abkhazian opposition, the head of the “Abkhaz People’s Movement” Adgur Ardzinba.
“One of the obstacles is precisely the single currency of the State of the Union. “Abkhazia can act as a kind of ‘sandbox’ where this story can be tested.” – suggests Ardzinba.
In his words, quoted by RBC, today a serious problem is arising in Abkhazia: the Russian ruble is used as an official means of payment. The politician pointed out that there are no longer any precedents of this type in the world: countries that use another country’s currency do so within the framework of international agreements and treaties.
Ardzinba clarified that the banking system of Abkhazia does not have the necessary liquidity to stimulate the development of the national economy – small and medium-sized businesses. All this is due to the fact that it has not yet been possible to determine the role of the financial system of Abkhazia in the Russian financial system. Therefore, the fact that the republic uses the Russian ruble must be formalized in some way, Ardzinba believes.
