“It is the most selfless act seen since George Washington”

Actor George Clooney, who publicly called for Joe Biden’s resignation last July, applauded the US president’s decision to step down from leadership at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday.

“Who deserves applause is the president who committed the most selfless act seen since the days of George Washington,” Clooney said when asked about the impact of the letter he published last July in The New York Times newspaper calling for Biden to be dropped from the race for reelection.

“What will be remembered is this selfless act, it is very difficult to leave power, we have seen it all over the world, that someone is able to recognize that there is a better option, that is what matters and the rest will not be remembered,” added the actor.

Clooney, a prominent Democratic supporter, said he was “proud” and “excited about the future” of the candidacy of current Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he endorsed last July. Although he later issued a statement on the matter, this is the first time he has spoken publicly about the impact of his letter, joining other voices calling for Biden’s replacement.

The American actor, producer and director is presenting this Sunday in Venice, out of competition, the action comedy “Wolfs” in which he reunites with Brad Pitt after the saga “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Burn after Reading” by the Coen brothers.

The presence in Venice of two of Hollywood’s latest male superstars caused a sensation and many fans camped out all day on the red carpet to get a photo or an autograph from their idols tonight at the premiere of “Wolfs.”
