The first migrants that Italy will welcome in those known as ‘shame centers“They are already in Albania. Giorgia Meloni’s government directed 16 people to the center it created in this Balkan country as part of its controversial project migration reception outsourcing system after trying to reach Italian lands via the Mediterranean. These include 10 migrants from Bangladesh and 6 others from Egypt.
The protocols state that migrants are identified and undergo health checks at the Schenhgjin port itself, from where they will be transferred to the identification center. It is about a fully fortified and militarized zone which is located a few meters from the boat.
After being identified, they will go to the Gjader reception camp, a few kilometers from the port. Both facilities are managed by the Italian authorities after a agreement between Rome and Tirana to avoid having to manage asylum requests and possible repatriations to their own territory.
EU wants to expand ‘shame centers’
This center is the key point of the repatriation plan to Albania established by Meloni who was supported this Tuesday by the European Commission. In fact, its president, Ursula Von der Leyen, urged the rest of the countries to copy the Italian plan and opt for “paths of progress regarding the idea of developing return centers outside the EU”.
