21.5% of vehicles that visited ITV stations during the year 2023 presented a level of polluting emissions that eexceeded the limits set by applicable regulationse, a figure that increased last year.
This was ensured by the Spanish Association of Collaborating Entities of the Vehicle Technical Control Administration in a new AECA-ITV breakfast“an event which consolidates itself as a reference in terms of road safety and environmental protection”, according to its promoters.
On this occasion, the entity carried out an analysis of the data published by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism (MINTUR) on technical inspections of vehicles carried out in the country in 2023.
Millions of inspections
According to these figures, last year the Spanish channels ITV achieved 21,878,186 checksexceeding ITV 81.1% on first inspection.
Regarding ITV non-compliance data, official figures show that and33.2% of vehicles that should have passed the ITV last year did not, “u“a figure which has increased by 24.8% since 2017, when the ITV non-compliance rate was 26.6%,” explains the association.
A worrying figure
“This is a worrying figure, especially at a time when the park is constantly aging, already exceeding 15.4 years on average. In fact, between 2017 and 2023, the age of the fleet increased by 14%, or 1.9 years more over the last 7 years,” declared the general director of AECA-ITV, Guillermo Magaz, during the meeting that took place in Madrid.
Also present were José Manuel Prieto, Deputy Director General of Quality and Industrial Safety of MINTUR; Juan José Matarí, member of the Senate, president of the Ibero-American Affairs Commission of the Senate and former president of the Road Safety Commission of the Congress of Deputies; and Mariano Oliveros Herrero, Deputy Director General for Strategy and Air Quality of the Community of Madrid.
Vans and trucks in worse condition
The figures show that the vans and trucks weighing more than 3,500 kg are, once again, the vehicles in the worst condition, since they have the most unfavorable technical controls. Actually, 28.8% of them do not pass the technical inspection on the first try.
Next come buses and coaches, with 27.2% failures; and then there are vans and trucks weighing less than 3,500 kg with an unfavorable MOT of 25.6%.
On the other hand, agricultural vehicles are those in the best conditions, with a total of 86.2% favorable controls. They are followed by motorcycles and quadswith 84.3% approval; ambulances and taxis, with 82.5% favorable inspections; and passenger cars, with 82.3% approval.
ITV rejections
Among the main causes why 18.9% of Spanish vehicles do not pass the technical inspection during the first technical inspection are lighting and signaling. This is still the section in which the most serious defects are detected, with 22.8%, more than a point less than last year.
As for polluting emissions21.5% of ITV refusals are motivated by poor functioning of polluting emissions control systems, a figure which increased by more than two points last year, going from third place in 2022 to second in 2023 .
Air quality
“This figure shows the key role the ITV plays in improving air quality, by identifying vehicles whose emissions exceed the limits set by regulations. We must remember that every year ITV prevents at least 575 premature deaths caused by polluting emissions”, recalled Guillermo Magaz, general director of AECA-ITV.
Axles, wheels, tires and suspensionwith 20.5% serious defects detected, is the third chapter in which the highest number of defects are detected in the ITV.
Tree planting
During the AECA-ITV breakfast, the entity also presented a video about the tree planting it carried out in the Sierra de la Paramera, in Avilawho suffered one of the biggest fires in history of Spain, burning more than 22,000 hectares.
The association joined the project forest restoration of this affected area, favoring the generation of new CO absorption zones and the recovery of the habitat of the flora and fauna of the area.
By planting trees, you help offset carbon emissions, making this initiative another measure to mitigate carbon emissions. climate change.
This action is in addition to “the daily work carried out by ITV channels to minimize the environmental impact of vehicles, thanks to detection of serious and very serious defects in polluting emissionsthus avoiding the emission of around 40,000 tonnes of emissions per year”, underlines the employer.
