IU asks for explanations on the use of a subsidy from Toledo City Hall for sewing workshops

Izquierda Unida de Castilla-La Mancha denounced the recent initiative of the Toledo City Council which will use public funds from the Women’s Institute of Castilla-La Mancha and the Ministry of Equality to Teaching sewing workshops for minors in local convents.

From IU, they consider that this type of activity “perpetuates gender stereotypes and evokes typical practices of the Women’s Section of the Franco regime”, reported the left-wing federation in a press release.

“We are deeply concerned that funds allocated for reconciling work and family life are being used to organize workshops in convents, aimed at teaching girls domestic tasks such as sewing,” said a spokesperson. regional voice of the IU women’s area. Isabelle Alvarez.

Thus, he hoped that these activities would not seek to train minors to become “good wives”, as recommended by the decalogue of the perfect wife under the Franco dictatorship.

The group also expressed its surprise to see that the Women’s Institute of Castile-La Mancha authorized the use of its logo in this initiative, which it considers incompatible with the objectives of gender equality.

“We are surprised that a proposal that promotes traditional and conservative gender roles is being given free rein, using regional funds and money from the Department of Equality, while these resources should be aimed at eliminating gender violence and promoting equality,” they added from IU.

In addition, they expressed concern that the Toledo City Council, governed by PP and Vox, promotes this type of activity. “We demand clear explanations on why the PP and Vox were authorized to carry out activities that contravene the objectives of the feminist struggle and on the purposes for which these funds are allocated,” declared the coordinator of the Space Women.

Izquierda Unida demands transparency and justification on the use of these resources and asks the Ministry of Equality and the Women’s Institute of Castile-La Mancha to reconsider the granting of this grant. “It is essential that public resources are used to promote real and effective equality, and not to reinforce stereotypes belonging to the past,” they conclude.
