Javier Tebas is once again evident by the advertising expenditures made by the League, with which he irrigates the media. In the accounts of the employers’ association for the last season (2023-2024), there appears an increase in the position for “Advertising, propaganda and public relations” compared to the previous year of 4.4 million euros. In all, 40.6 million, of which only 3.3 million appear broken down into “brand content”, media content directly financed or produced by employers.
The League increased the budget allocated to advertising by 12%. Part of this amount goes to the media. Something that, paradoxically, was discussed by the President of the League after the Real Madrid Assembly, during which Florentino Pérez He demanded transparency in this section.
The League’s transparency, at least in its public accounts, barely exists in this section. In the section reserved for “external services” appear no less than 155 million euros in spending, which represents a considerable increase compared to the 141.4 million for the 2022-2023 season. This includes employer expenses allocated to leases and royalties; repairs and conservation; independent professional services; insurance premiums; banking and similar services; advertising, propaganda and public relations; supplies and an item intended for other services.
Among these expenses, the most important is that allocated to independent professionals, which amounts to 80 million euros which are not detailed at any time. In second place are expenditures on advertising, propaganda and public relations. This amount is used, among other things, to finance the media and exceeds that invested the previous year.
Tebas spent a total of 40.6 million euros in this concept, of which 3.3 million are due to content financed in the media, in the name of branded content. It remains to be seen what the remaining 37.3 million euros spent on advertising are for, which in turn correspond to five million euros more than in 22-23.
Tebas advertising takes off
Before the report on the annual accounts of the League is made public, Javier Tebas did not hesitate to criticize Florentino Pérez, after the president of Real Madrid demanded transparency which, according to him, does not exist. The president of the white club stressed that, despite the constant requests they made to the League to know which media it subsidizes and what it bases on to allocate one amount or another, they have not obtained an answer clear.
This answer is not given in this report either, in which everything is camouflaged under various headings, but without really detailing advertising expenditure. It does not appear which media to which funds are allocated by the League within these 40.6 million which are used for this.
Tebas, instead of responding clearly to Florentino, preferred to throw balls at him and attack him, saying that “It’s ironic to hear this from someone who used his power to influence the firing of newspaper editors”. Regarding the assertions of the president of Real Madrid, he limited himself to saying that a report prepared by a consulting firm “certifies that all economic relations with the clubs have been completely transparent and adapted to market prices.”
