NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana officially notified NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg today, 3 September, that he will resign. His term expires next week.
“Mircea worked for NATO for almost five years. His focus on technology and emerging security issues has been instrumental in driving innovation within the Alliance. He is a true champion of North American-European relations. His work with partners has brought many benefits to NATO. I wish him all the best for the future.” – wrote the NATO Secretary General.
Joane said: “Leading NATO has been the honour of a lifetime.”
“As I move forward into a new chapter, I look back with pride and remember a memorable time serving the most important Alliance in history.” – he wrote on social media.
Joanne will be replaced in the NATO post by a German Boris Rugethe current deputy secretary-general for political affairs and security policy of the alliance. He now heads the group responsible for political issues in the bloc’s International Military Staff.
Last week, Mircea Geoana told Digi 24 that he plans to run for president of Romania. He then confirmed that he made this decision on a personal level, and will make an official statement when his term ends. Geoana added that Romania is ready “for important changes” and that the 2024 presidential election will be the most important in the last 20 years. According to him, “it is a matter of internal affairs, everything is discussed at the level of the NATO leadership.”
Mircea Geoana, now 66, was the president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) from 2005 to 2010, and in 2009 he became its candidate for the presidency of Romania. He then lost the race. Traianu Basescu.
