Joint event of local and foreign NGOs related to COP29 was held at the UN

“Towards a more inclusive COP29: Achieving climate justice” co-organized by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) and the Public Union Gender Equality Youth Center of Azerbaijan within the framework of the UN Future Summit in New York City, USA. A side event was organized on the theme “Bridging the main trends in gender equality and intersectional reconciliation into the mainstream flow to become a world leader in climate justice.”

The report states that the event’s partners were UN Women, the Women’s Major Group, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations and the State Agency for Support of Non-Governmental Organizations.

The moderator of the event, which was attended by 60 NGO representatives from thirty-five countries, Maryam Majidova, member of the COP29 Organizing Committee, President of the Public Trade Union of Azerbaijan Youth Center for Gender Equality “Gender Hub”, informed the participants about the main nature of the side event and spoke about gender aspects of climate justice.

The Executive Director of the Pan African Just Climate Alliance (PACJA), Dr Mitika Mwenda, Head of Economic Empowerment at UN Women, Dr Jemimah Njuki and Harriete Chiggai, Advisor to the President of Kenya on Women’s Rights, delivered speeches.

They mentioned and appreciated the importance of Azerbaijan’s global initiatives related to COP29.

Florence Syevuo, Executive Director of Kenya’s “SDG Forum” on “Women’s Economic Empowerment, Information and Climate Change”, Ojaswi KC, Executive Director of Nepal’s Human Rights and Justice Center (HRJC) on “People’s Military Rights, Peace and Climate Change”, Aytekin Asgarova, Founder of “IndiGenius Global” on “Empowering Local Peoples in the New Economy: Combining Ancient Knowledge with Modern Innovation”, Sascha Gabizon, Executive Director of “WMG” organizations on “Gender Just Climate Solutions: Local Women’s Leadership and its Implications for National-Level Climate Policies”, “Climate Justice Frameworks for Gender, Racial and Economic Justice: Ways to Regulate the Transition”, with the participation of Osprey Orielle Lake, Executive Director of WECAN.

Aygun Aliyeva, member of the COP29 Organizing Committee and Executive Director of the State Agency for Support to NGOs, also participated in the event.

The event concluded with a question and answer session, at the end of which the participants signed a joint declaration.
